I really enjoyed interviewing jewelry designers and makers Brittany Clay and Rachel Dahm.  Brittany and Rachel have both started their own successful independent jewelry businesses, and their stuff is beautiful.

I wanted to interview Brittany and Rachel because I know so many people, and I have been one myself, who have an idea they want to  explore, or something new they want to try, but just need to the courage to move into action. I know so many people who want to be creative, but think they can’t be because they never have been before. I believe we get braver together, and we get braver by hearing other people’s stories.  We usually only get to see an outcome, but Brittany and Rachel help us see and celebrate the process.

You’ll hear two completely different stories about what being creative means. For Brittany it is a returning to a type of therapy for her to be creative, and Rachel never knew she could be. Hearing someone break out of their own box is so inspiring. What boxes are we keeping ourselves in? We discuss being your own cheerleader, and how much more freedom there is in believing there is room at the table for everyone instead of competing from a scarcity model.  We also talk about how vulnerable it is to put yourself out there, but how it’s worth it, too.

Brittany Clay is a mother of 3 children, and always wanted to be a mother. She cites her journey in motherhood, as helping give her to grow in confidence in ways she hadn’t before. Brittany has been creative for as long as she can remember, always with pair of scissors or some sort of art supply in her hands. So much of her creative work has always been around supporting and making her friends look and feel beautiful. She credits her two grandmothers in particular, and her family in general, for fostering her love of the arts.

Rachel Dahm is a wife, mother of three girls and loves outdoor family adventures. While Rachel’s professional background is in non profit corporate fundraising, she now has her own jewelry company Lupero Designs. Rachel works to create jewelry that is comfortable and makes women feel beautiful. You might never expect to hear Rachel describe how she never knew she could be creative. Rachel discovery of her own creativity in her jewelry design and making gives us all a story to consider what we may be considering is not a part of us, and what we could discover about ourselves if we try something new.

I hope hearing their stories of putting an idea into action will give you courage, too.
